What causes Restless Nurse Syndrome?
Even though the exact cause of Restless Nurse Syndrome (RNS) is a mystery, Dr. Turbatus believes that RNS may be related to Jobisitis (JOB - uh - sitis), a condition in which the nurse’s current position cuts off the flow of satisfaction to the brain. The chemical that is responsible for satisfaction facilitates communication between the brain and the nerve cells that control body movement. When the satisfaction system does not work correctly, it causes an uncontrollable urge in the nurse to move in order to ease the discomfort and boredom in her current position.
Every Restless Nurse Syndrome case is different and can be set off by different triggers. Dr. Turbatus believes this may cause the uncomfortable sensations you may feel as a nurse in a boring or overly stressful hospital environment.
The theory that the nurse’s brain responds to a lack of job satisfaction is evidenced by the fact that nurses’ symptoms improve when Lacidem and Travel Nursing is introduced.
About 70% of people with RNS say someone in their hospital suffers similar symptoms. RNS is a serious condition, and the symptoms worsen the longer the nurse ignores them. (The Lacidem and travel nursing treatment is only meant for patients with two years of experience as a nurse; prior to that the nurses symptoms are not mature enough for treatment). Women are only slightly more to develop RNS than men.
